The 10,000 meter Olympic qualifying train was running at JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano, Ca on Saturday night. The qualifying standard for the summer's games in Paris for women is 30:40. With pace lights set for 29:37 and 30:40, athletes ran to make those times. Alicia Monson and Tsigie Gebreselama attempted in the early stages of the race to run the 29:37 time. Eventually Monson dropped out of the race and Gebreselama finished in a time of 29:48.34. Weini Kelati, Lauren Ryan and Megan Keith all made the Olympic standard of 30:40.
The goal for the men was to get under 27:00 minutes for the Olympic standard. For much of the race, a line of runners hung in there to get the standard. Grant Fisher used his kick to win the event in a time of 26:52.04 with Nico Young of NAU breaking the NCAA 10,000 meter record with his second place time 26:52.72.
