Brooks hosts a championship race that formerly known at Footlocker at the famed Balboa Park course on Saturday. Here is a preview of the meet:
Girls Race 9:15
The top three finishers at last week's NXN will have a rematch on Saturday. NXN champion Natasza Dudek of Ann Arbor Pioneer (MI) will race a deep field including NXN runner-up Blair Bartlett of Lawrenceville (NJ) and local athlete and third place NXN finisher Jaelyn Williams of Eastlake. Other athletes of note include Summer Wilson of Irvine who set the Woodward Park course record two weeks ago at the California State Meet. Abigail Hennesey of Westford Academy (MA) won Brooks NE, Emma Hoffman of Otsego (NY) finished fifth last week at NXN, Avery Lowen of Bowdon (GA) finished sixth at NXN, Maddie Gullickson of Wayzata (MN) finished seventh at NXN and led her team to the NXN team championship. Llily Alder of Timpview (UT) won the competitive NXR SW a few weeks ago and Addy Ritzenhein of Niwot (CO) won NXN in 2023.
Summer Wilson and Jaelyn Williams are among the many west coast athletes racing on Saturday. Braelyn Combe of Santiago (Corona) is the defending California 1600 meter track and field champion and Chiara Dailey is a local athlete from La Jolla and will be racing at Balboa Park for the fourth time. Carol Dye of Santa Margarita, Elliana Patterson from Christian, another local school, Farah Allen of Branson and Giselle Fernandez of Riverbank are the other west coast athletes.
Boys Race 10:05
Like the girl's race, the top three NXN finishers will have another round of racing. Jackson Spencer of Herriman (UT) has won races from the state meet in Utah to Woodbridge and Clovis in California. Spencer won in Oregon too with his NXN victory. Yohanes Van Meerten of Flagstaff returns to California after setting the Mt SAC course record. He finished second last week at NXN. Caden Leonard of Southlake Carroll (TX) finished third at NXN for the second straight year. Marcelo Mantecon of Belen Jesuit (FL) is coming off a fourth place finish at NXN, Sean Fries of Minnetonka (MN) finished seventh at NXN and Paul Van Laningham of Cooper (KY) is another top ten NXN finisher. Lucan Tanner of DeForest (WI) finished second at Brooks MW, Kamari Ronfeldt of Ann Arbor Pioneer (MI) finished third at Brooks MW and Calvin Seitz of Springs Valley (IN) won Brooks MW. Other contenders are Sam Laverdiere of Lake Region (ME) who won Brooks NE and Nathan Van Laningham of Brunswick (CT) who finished second at Brooks NE.
West coast athletes competing include Conor Lott of Clovis North who won the division 1 California State Meet and the 1600 meter race at the California State Meet in May. Blake Bay of Fresno Christian, Braulio Castillo of West Ranch, Andres Lomeli of Kimball and local athlete Josiah Bowman of Sage Creek are the other west coast athletes racing Saturday.
