Mt. Carmel High School hosts the 45th annual Mt. Carmel Sun Devil Invitational on Saturday at the famed Balboa Park in San Diego. Here are some of the invitational teams and athletes to watch.
Division 2 Invitational
Charlotte Hopkins of Arcadia, Ari Llorens of Francis Parker and Ayanna Hickey of The Bishop's School headline the division 2 girl's invitational race. Hopkins ran 16:25.0 and Hickey ran 16:42.3 at the Woodbridge sweepstake's race. Llorens won the elite girl's race at the Grit and Grind meet last week in a time of 16:58.2.
Division 1 Invitational
Jaelyn Williams of Eastlake finished third in the girl's sweepstakes race at the Woodbridge Invitational in a time of 15:52.2. She will be the class of the D1 field. Other strong girl runners include the Mt Carmel duo of Olivia Campos and Isabella Mayer, Malia Guillen of Oceanside and Isabella Ramos of Point Loma. Del Norte, Poway, Scripps Ranch, host Mt. Carmel and Point Loma are some of the top girl's teams in the D1 race.
The boy's D1 race has athletes who competed in the sweepstakes race at Woodbridge including Jaxon Northcutt of Mt Carmel who ran 14:12.8 and Cooper Castleberry of Poway who ran 14:19.9. Nathan Wilber of Cathedral Catholic took second at Woodbridge's rated race in a time of 14:24.8. Other athletes of note racing Saturday include Tyus Joseph of Helix, who won the the Woodbridge Blue A race in a time of 14:35.2, Josiah Bowman of Sage Creek and Cruz Espinoza of Canyon Crest Academy. Host Mt Carmel and Poway look to be the top teams in the race with San Marcos, Canyon Crest and Scripps Ranch to also challenge.
