South Sound Classic Recap

Athletes competed Saturday at Carl Sparks Stadium near the Washington State Fairgrounds on a cold and sometimes rainy day. Here are some of the highlights:


800


Julia Stuard of Tahoma wins the 800

Julia Stuard of Tahoma entered the meet with a 2:15.97 personal best and the sixth fastest 800-meters time of the season in Washington. Stuard took command of the race from the start and won in 2:17.84. Lauren Laws of South Kitsap finished second in 2:18.38. Ryan Lewis of Tahoma is the reigning 4A Washington State 800-meter Champion and proved on Saturday to be tough to beat in 2023. He finished with a season best time of 1:55.12. Jonathan Miles of Gig Harbor set a personal best time of 1:55.97 to finish second. Lewis' time ranks him fourth in Washington and Miles time places him seventh on the Washington 800-meter list.


1600


Cruize Corvin of Lakes wins the 1600

Julia Couch of Auburn Riverside broke the 5-minute 1600-meter barrier last year at the State Meet and broke it again with a personal best victory of 4:57.88. Couch’s time places her fourth on Washington’s 1600-meter list. Emme Bates of Emerald Ridge finished second in 5:00.71 and places her seventh on the Washington 1600-meter list and Lathan West of Bonney Lake took third at 5:05.13 and that places her ninth on Washington’s 1600-meter race. Cruize Corvin of Lakes broke 9-minutes at Arcadia last week and won the 1600-meter race on Saturday in convincing fashion with 4:14.81 time. Isaac Briggs of Rogers (Puyallup) closed on the last lap to finish at 4:16.07. Corvin’s finish ranks him third in Washington and Briggs is sixth in Washington. Zachary Walsh of Yelm (4:18.59) finished with the seventh fastest time in state and Conner Wirth (4:19.62) of Emerald Ridge has the tenth fastest 1600-meter time in state.

Eliza White of Curtis ran a strong last lap to pull away for the 3200-meter victory in a time of 10:53.98 which places her seventh on the Washington 3200-meter list. Lathan West of Bonney Lake had a nice day with a PR in the 1600-meter race and second place finish time of 10:55.59 and another personal best. West’s time ranks her ninth on Washington’s list. Aliyah Yearian of Port Townsend (East Jefferson) third place finish of 10:56.23 places her tenth on the Washington 3200-meter list. Zander Trevino of Lakes and Conner Wirth of Emerald Ridge battled back and forth in the 3200-meter race. Trevino edged Wirth at the finish to win in 9:23.46 and now has the ninth fastest time in Washington. Wirth’s time of 9:23.70 ranks him tenth in Washington.
