On Saturday teams from the Northwest will race for spots at NXN. The top two teams and the five individuals who are not on the top two teams will qualify for NXN. Here is a preview of Saturday's championship races.
Girls Championship Race 2:35 Mountain Time
The girl's team race is anyone guess as who will qualify. Two Oregon schools to watch are state champions Lincoln and Crater. Summit lost its 15 year winning streak last week and may view Boise as incentive to get into the top two. Sehome girls can be a surprise team that can make NXN with fellow Washington schools Bishop Blancet and Mt Si hoping to land in the top two. The meet could come down to the host state of Idaho with Dyestat ranked Rocky Mountain being the winner. Idaho's Capital, Boise and Timberline have all won big invitationals this season.
Sophia Rodriguez of Mercer Island set the course record in Pasco and is one of the individual favorites. Chloe Huyler of Lakeridge ran the fastest time last Saturday in Eugene. Emily Wisniewski of Crescent Valley won her fourth Oregon 5A state title and finished third last year at NXN. Other athletes to watch include Nelida Dalgas of North Salem, Cassidy Armstrong of Ballard, Victoria Rodriguez of Mercer Island, Elektra Higgins of Peninsula and Paisley Taylor of Meridian.
Boys Championship Race 3:20 Mountain Time
The meet looks like team race between Idaho's Coeur d'Alene, Crater and Jesuit. Other notable teams include Central Catholic, Summit, Sehome and Mercer Island. If Coeur d'Alene and Crater make it to NXN, then there will individual spots open as Maximus and Zackery Cervi-Skinner of Coeur d'Alene and Josiah Tostenson and Tayvon Kitchen of Crater will be out of the individual spots.
Individually, Owen Powell of Mercer Island has been the top runner in the Northwest and won Washington's 3A race last week. Hayden Boaz of Summit, Malachi Schoenherr of Sheldon, Cooper Boyle of Tahoma, Vince Recupero of Bishop Blanchet, Kade Brownell of Mt Spokane, Nate Stadlander of Meridian and Jack Sheesley of Boise are athletes who have a chance to qualify for NXN.
