Jim Danner Championships

Maddie Carney of Caldera (left) and Kylie Madariaga of Wenatchee

Chloe Ruth of Silver Creek (CO) led the girls to the one mile mark with Maddie Carney of Caldera (OR) in close pursuit. At the two-mile mark Carney was joined by Kylah Madariaga of Wenatchee (WA) for the battle of the Jim Danner Championship. The race came down to an exciting finish with Carney winning on the 5000 meter course in 17:17.1 and Madariaga coming in second in a time of 17:17.4. Maddie Carney's victory meant that she is the second person in her family to win the Jim Danner Award as her mother Carrie Morales of Mountain View (OR) won the Jim Danner race in 1991. Capital of Idaho won the team title with Central Oregon schools of Summit and Caldera coming in a close second and third.

Division 1

Eliisa Marshall of Camas

Close finishes continued in the girls division one race as Eliisa Marshall of Camas (OR) won in 18:29.0 and Alyssa Wyatt of Etiwanda (CA) finished second in 18:30.0. Seattle Prep (WA) girls team won the D1 title. Kai Jensen of Cleveland (OR) won the boy's D1 race with Emiliano Diaz-Garcia of Clackamas (OR) finishing second. Lincoln (OR) boys won the D1 race which should be noted that their actual varsity squad was racing in Illinois on Saturday. The Cardinals of Lincoln showed their depth. An apology to all the runners in the boy's D1 race. The athletes ran in the wrong direction at the beginning of the race which caused the distance to be 5600 meters. I have been helping put on the meet since 1992 and this is the first time this has happened at our meet. I feel terrible. I take responsibility for the mistake. As a former athlete and coach, I know this was a frustrating experience for athletes and coaches.
