One of the largest distance only track meets in the US will kick off on Friday morning at Dublin High School and end on Saturday night with the distance medley relay. Here are the athletes to watch in the elite or sombrero races.

4 X 800

The 4 X 800 meter has picked up momentum thanks to the inclusion of the event in the California State Meet three years ago. Since most of the athletes for the 4 X 800 on Friday evening, expect fast times. Campolindo girls are the two time defending 4 X 800 champions and hope to repeat again. Northgate, Los Gatos, Carlmont, Evergreen Valley, St. Ignatius and Mountain View are other contenders.

Bellarmine College Prep won the boy's 4 X 800 last year and look to repeat. Campolindo boys were nationally ranked in cross country last fall and won the division 3 state title and should be a serious contender. Menlo Atherton boys also had a strong cross country campaign and will test the field.

1600 Meters

Gretchen Yakaitis of Carondelet

The first of the individual sombrero races will be contested on Saturday evening. Khloe DelaTorre of Vacaville is the top returner and ran 4:48.95 last year at Sacramento Meet of Champions. Giselle Fernandez of Riverbank has a 4:43.80 personal best run at last year's state final. A couple of state cross country champions are entered in the 1600 with division 5 champions Ella Mogannam of Lick Wilmerding and division 3 champion Gretchen Yakaitis of Carondelet racing Saturday.

Henry Hauser of Menlo Schools

David Solsson of Galena (NV) will cross state lines and has a 4:14.05 personal best.

Distance Medley Relay

Campolindo girls have the potential to win both distance relays this weekend (like they did last year), but there will be plenty of contenders Branson, Mountain View and Crystal Springs Uplands.

Bellarmine College Prep boys also have the potential to sweep both relays (like they did last year) and Mountain View, Carlmont and Whitney will also challenge.

Look for photo galleries of the DDF soon after the meet!
