Athletes from the southwest part of Washington race on Saturday to qualify for the Washington State Meet that will be competed on the following Saturday.


1B-2B, 1A, 2A

The morning races will feature the schools with smaller school size. In the 1B-2B races, look for John Paul II to be strong in both genders with Kevin Hu and Ruby Henry leading the way. In the 1A girl's race, Krystin Timothy of Cascade Christian has successfully raced with the larger schools this season with top ten finishes at Bellarmine Prep Invitational and the Tacoma Twilight XC meet. Vashon Island girls and boys are contenders to make the state meet as well as the East Jefferson boy's team. Individually for the 1A boys look for Joshua Healey of Vashon Island, Cooper Dicks of Annie Wright and Joshua Yearian of East Jefferson to be in the front pack. Bainbridge boys and girls are the contenders in the 2A division with individual stars Ryan Dodge and Ignacio Llorens of Bainbridge for the boys and Emma Gice of Kingston and Evelyn Shutske of Bainbridge leading the 2A girls.


3A

In the afternoon, the 3A girls take the line as Central Kitsap, Bellarmine Prep, White River and Gig Harbor looking to make the state meet. Lejla Carlsson of Gig Harbor has finished third or better in all of her races this fall. Marie Wiegman of Bellarmine Prep, Paeton Poelman of White River and the Federal Way duo of May Wentworth and Abigail Collier hoping to challenge Carlsson.

Mana Voss of Central Kitsap finished seventh in a quality field at Nike Portland XC and has won a number of invitationals in Washington. Other athletes of interest in the 3A race include Bellarmine Prep's Luke Saafield and Colin Harper, Gig Harbor's Gavin McKeegan and Max Dower and Prairie's Tavin Timperly. Teams vying for the state meet include Central Kitsap, Gig Harbor and Bellarmine Prep.


4A

Latham West of Bonney Lake
Latham West of Bonney Lake

Latham West of Bonney Lake has competed well throughout her career and finished second on the Chambers Creek course at the Hoka John Payne Invitational. The 4A race has a number of athletes who can challenge West like Charlotte White of Curtis, Kate Westfall of Camas, Sydney Kosa of Olympia and Ella Koch of Union. Some of the top 4A teams are Olympia, Camas and Tahoma.

Cohen Butler of Camas

Cohen Butler of Camas set the meet record at the Nike Hole in the Wall race and should be considered the favorite in the 4A race. Isaac Benjamin of South Kitsap may disagree as he is one of the top runners in the nation. Other notable 4A athletes include Owen Mangrum of Curtis, Lord King Nana-Badu-Weah of Battleground, freshman Quenton Lanese of Olympia and Carson Stafford of Tahoma. Stadium, Curtis and Tahoma are teams looking to qualify for State.
