Rose City Championship Recap



Portland area schools Ida B Wells and Lincoln hosted the second annual Rose City Championship at the Rose City Golf Course in Portland. Usually mid October is the beginning of the cloudy and rainy Portland season that people have come to know. Instead the weather was in the 80s for the afternoon races which created some challenges for athletes and joy for fans and photographers.


Silver Varsity Races


Olin Gilster of Oregon Episcopal

Olin Gilster of Oregon Episcopal took the lead from the gun and had a nearly seven second lead after one mile. Gilster cruised for the win on the 5000 meter course in 16:29.6 with Samuel Ulrich of Siuslaw finishing second in 16:37.4. Siuslaw boys came away with the team victory at 97 points with Valley Catholic finishing second with 106 points. Siuslaw and Valley Catholic will meet again in a month at the 3A State Meet.



In the girl's Silver Varsity Race, Lauren Tittel of Oregon Episcopal and Jocelyn Schnurbusch of McNary took the lead at one mile. Tittel took a slight lead over Mira Garland of Mountainside at mile two. Oregon Episcopal swept the individual championship in the Silver races as Tittel won in 19:57.3 and Garland finished second in 20:08.4. Mountainside won the team battle over Siuslaw.


Championship Varsity Races



Eight male athletes came by the one came by the one mile in the 4:45-4:46 range on this warm day and at the two mile mark only Logan Law of Milwaukie, Samy Anderson of Lincoln and Wes Shipsey of Central Catholic remained from the original pack. At the finish Law and Anderson raced to the line with Logan winning in 15:17.2 and Samy finishing in 15:17.5. Jack Meier of West Salem patiently navigated warm afternoon for third place and led West Salem to a team victory with 78 points and Central Catholic in second with 96 points.


Ella Thorsett of Summit and Emily Wisniewski of Crescent Valley

Sabine Kim of Tigard took the race out and led at the mile mark with six girls closing the gap. At the two mile mark, Emily Wisniewski of Crescent Valley and Ella Thorsett of Summit were left of the lead pack. Emily eventually pulled away for the win in 18:25.7 and Ella finishing second in 18:32.2. Ella's teammate Barrett Justema finished third to help lead Summit for the team victory at 72 points and host Lincoln finishing second with 92 points.
